Candy Corn Kisses

I can't believe tomorrow is September!  Where has the year gone?  So it's the Friday before a long weekend... love them!  I'm just crossing my fingers that this means I get to leave work early today :D  I need to do a little clean-up because Rick and Erin are coming with Ben for the night before they fly home to Virginia tomorrow.  I can't wait to see my adorable little nephew (and Rick and Erin too, of course ;)!

I FINALLY, after almost 9 months, got a haircut last night.  It's the simple things in life that make me the happiest.  I felt that as I walked out of the salon, and then again while I was in my little attic listening to music and coloring a stamped giraffe with colored pencils.  Silly, but it was just so relaxing!  It was nice to work on a layout again (another Africa one, obviously ;), and I'm really excited for slightly cooler weather that should be just around the corner.  I think half of my reticence in scrapbooking has been the thought of facing that room when it's hot. Fan or no fan!

Img_3144In other news... I was at Target last night, very assiduously following my shopping list, when what did I see?  A new flavor of Hershey's kiss.  Tempting in and of itself, but these are candy corn flavored!  I love candy corn.  I mean seriously.  It doesn't matter that candy corn is pretty much made of solid corn syrup and I can only eat about 5 pieces before I'm completely sugar shocked and done.  I still love them.  But candy corn kisses?  I had to get some.  They look like candy corn too, aren't they cute? (here's where I admit that I stole this picture from another blog because I was lazy and didn't do my own.  I'll remedy that and upload my own picture soon... at least, that's the current plan.  lol).  I was hoping that it would be some kind of candy corn filling, but alas, they taste mostly like white chocolate.  They're still good, but I think they look better than they taste.  Which, of course, is much more beneficial to my current healthy eating plan than the alternative would have been. :)

Only two weeks until NHL training camps start up!  I'm not counting down or anything. ;) (Note my new Avs News tracker to the left.  Am I a total geek or what?  lol).

Happy Friday!

"Watch My Icy Hot Super Slide"

I didn't get a chance to see Blades of Glory in the theater, but it just came out on DVD this week and I got in from Netflix yesterday.  Oh.My.Goodness.  Sooooo funny.  Hysterically funny.  I don't know if it was the recent insomnia making me punch drunk when I watched this, but the skating sequences had me laughing so hard I was in tears.  By the end of the movie my abs hurt.  Jon Heder - brilliant.  Here are some highlights for general enjoyment :D

And, now that it's less than 2 weeks from Muse... here's another of my favorite Muse songs.  I love the bass on this one. (This also happens to be my new ring tone.  Love it!)

Birthday Nostalgia

In honor of our upcoming celebration of Steph's birthday, this weekend I did a layout with some pictures from the last big birthday weekend :D  Good times.

This also happens to be the layout I mentioned last week where I was playing with my Silhouette - I made the black circle paper (which is all one diecut) this way.  I'm pleased with how it came out!  Anyway, you can see details here if you're interested.

Guessing Game

So.  What do all of these things have in common?

Have you figured it out yet?  Steph and I are going a little crazy to celebrate her birthday this year.  We're going to Dallas(!!!) to see a totally kick-butt concert featuring four sweet rock bands.  We have great seats.  Excitement abounds :D

Pointless Posting

I admit it.  I'm posting just to post.  I have nothing to say, really.  lol.  Okay, there are a few bands I'm loving lately that deserve a call-out... I added them to my new handy-dandy list of stuff I'm listening to on the right.  Totally loving:

Since October

Black Light Burns

Armor for Sleep

and liking Arctic Monkeys a lot too.

So, I spent some time updating my iPod last night (it's an obsession lately, I admit it) and also working on another scrapbook layout.  I didn't really get too far, but I did have an awesome time playing with PhotoShop and my Silhouette... I tried to do my own version of the new KI Memories lace paper that was released at CHA last month.  Despite the obvious problem that I can't do a 12x12 sheet, it was pretty successful.  I'll post when I'm done :)

That is all.  Return to your regularly scheduled blog surfing ;)

P.S.  I updated my color scheme and banner today (notes on the obvious).  I'm trying to decide if the black and white is a mood thing.  I loved my Africa banner (and still love it, really), but I was pretty tired of my "safari" color palette.  So, one going with the other and all... anyway.  We'll see how long this one lasts.  If it stays up long enough, I won't even have to update for Halloween!  Bonus. :)

P.P.S.  Has anyone noticed that I'm doing a lot of PSs on my posts lately?  What's up with that?  I have no idea where it came from.  I just noticed that it's becoming a habit.  Might have to do something about that.

Notes from a Proud Owner of Bright Orange Curtains

P8190001So as promised, here it is, in all its Ikea-ized glory, my newly accessorized bedroom. No one will ever be able to say that I'm afraid of color, that's for sure :D  We won't discuss the issues that I had getting the double curtain rod hardware and pendant lighting up, only to remember, after I finally got it all working, that there's such a thing as wall anchors and I have a whole bunch in my tool box.  Sigh.  Anyway, I like the curtains.  They're really quite bright, but they're translucent, irridescent and billowy :)  I love the glow that I can see from down the hall now... they turn the light a golden orange at certain times of day and it's very relaxing.  I love the change - it's so bright and fun.  Now I just need to find a way to frame some small painted canvases that I picked up in Johannesburg - they're odd sized.  I might have to get a mitre box and do my own framing... scary as the thought may seem :D.

In other news, I did go see The Last Legion on Saturday and I quite enjoyed it.  Is the woman who plays Mira spectacularly beautiful or what?  My family also saw it on Saturday, and my dad apparently didn't buy Colin Firth in his role.  Huh?  Maybe it's a girl thing, but I thought he was great.  Good show.  Also, I watched Possession last night (Gwyneth Paltrow, Aaron Eckart, Jennifer Ehle and Jeremy Northam).  I loved it.  How have I not seen this movie before?  Excellent show.  I recommend it :)

Finally, I managed to finish another layout yesterday - I've been working on this one off and on this week.  These are pictures from the V&A Waterfront Hotel in Cape Town where Nicole and I stayed in May.  We had the most spectacular view of the harbor and Table Mountain from our room.  Unbelievable.  I want to go back.

If you're interested, close-ups and details are here.

P.S.  Happy Anniversary to Rick and Erin!  2 Years and counting :D

Counting Down...

Yay!  It's Friday.  I've been perusing the Ikea catalog in my quest to continue with my bedroom / guest room makeovers.  Can't wait to get to the store for round 2 :D  I decided to move the new orange bedding into my room instead of leaving it in the guest room, so this weekend I'm off to get new curtains and a new lamp (because mauve and orange don't go well together.  I'm just sayin'.)  Green and mauve are going to the guest room for now.  I'll probably replace them completely eventually.  It's so amazing what a simple change in color does for the feeling in a room, though, isn't it?

Also, I'm excited because Creating Keepsakes requested one of my layouts for an upcoming issue :)  This is actually the first time they've picked up one of my layouts from a general submission, so I'm thrilled!

AvsAnd last but not least, it is now officially less than a month until we see some hockey action again.  Aside from my occassional Netflix indulgence and Hell's Kitchen (now, sadly over), my TV has spend a lot of time in off mode this summer.  I miss hockey!  I go into withdrawl every summer, but I'm so excited that we're finally on the countdown to the new season :D  The Avs are totally going to rock this year.  I can just feel it!

P.S. Did anyone know that there are now 3 Musketeers dark chocolate mint bars?  I picked up some minis at Target for my emergency sugar stash and I'm LOVING them! Evil, evil chocolate.

P.P.S. Happy Anniversary mom and dad!  37 years :D

Although I have not yet seen Becoming Jane or The Bourne Ultimatum (both on my list of definite must-sees), I think this is going to be my entertainment for this weekend.  Hello.  Colin Firth, Arthurian Legend... what more do you need?

Now, as hard as it is for me to choose, I think this is my favorite Muse song right now.  Seriously awesome.

And, I finally managed to finish that Moulin Rouge layout this weekend.  Of course now, every time I look at it, I think of ways I'd like to change it.  Sigh.  I'm such a perfectionist sometimes.

EclipseOkay, so I have a lot of them.  I admit it.  But I have 2 fairly recent ones.  I've mentioned my new addiction to the Twilight book series, but I don't think I've admitted previous to this that it really *is* an addiction.  I'm coming clean.  My name is Gwen, and I'm totally and completely addicted to these books.  I picked up book 3, Eclipse, on Tuesday at lunch.  I had put a copy on reserve on a whim, and I'm so glad I did!  I got into the store and got into a long line where, I'm not kidding, EVERY single person in line was picking up a reserved copy of the book.  There wasn't a single copy available if you hadn't reserved one, and they were hauling them out by the cartload.  lol.  I actually got an email from Borders this morning highlighting a discussion group who was debating whether Eclipse is the new Harry Potter.  I don't know about that, but I'll put Harry Potter down to re-read one of these.  I've read Eclipse twice since I picked it up and I just love it.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  I LOVE good books!

Addiction #2, partly caused by current addiction #1.  Muse.  The music group.  Stephenie Meyer has credited Muse for inspiration in all 3 of the Twilight books (is anyone else amused (haha, no pun intended) by the irony of a band called Muse being someone's muse?  Maybe that's just me ;).  I already liked their music, but after reading these books (and chatting with my cousin Ryan, also a fan), I started giving them a closer listen and I LOVE their music!

So, that is all.  Two new addictions.  I just needed to share :D

Putting the "Bed" in Bedroom :D

P8040003So those who have seen my house (or at least pictures of it) probably don't recognize the scene to the right.  Why yes.  Yes that IS my guest room.  And what's that blocking the previously typical view of the ghastly gray industrial carpet?  Oh yeah.  A bed :D  I've been saying for 8 months now that I was going to get a bed for my guest room, and I finally did it.  (Insert a rendition of the hallelujah chorus from all family members who have, until now, had to experience my guest room in the company of a leaky air mattress.)

I found out on Friday that my family have booked tickets to come visit me for BYU Homecoming next month.  Rick and Erin are probably also going to bring Ben down from Idaho for the weekend.  So, at this point (with some help and encouragement from mom), I had to give into the inevitable and find a replacement for the air mattress.  I found a great deal on Craig's list for a brand new queen mattress set.  (This is where I insert a HUGE thank-you to Vic for being willing to come help me pick everything up in his truck, with 2 kids in tow while Mel was at work.  Could NOT have done it without him!)  Also, this is where I express my joy at living 5 minutes from an Ikea.  I love Ikea.  But that's a separate post :D.  Oh, and Mel, I'm sorry that your daughter is now in love with Ikea as well.  Be careful if you take her back.  She likes to test all of the beds, lol.

Anyway, I picked up the bed and the quilt cover / pillow cases at Ikea and then spent Saturday afternoon assembling the thing.  I'm not looking forward to having to take it apart again if I need to move it, but I'll deal with that later.  I'm planning to have curtains and maybe even a bedside table or two before the fam gets here next month.  But let's not get too crazy, right?  I'm just exited to see something in that room besides the carpet when I pass by... especially when I think about the nasty rug burns I got while crawling around on said carpet putting the thing together (hehe... I just accidentally typed crapet and almost left it because it fits). :D
